SOAR stands for Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration. At SOAR, you will begin your transition to UW–Madison by learning about academic advising, degree requirements, student life, and campus resources. You will also enroll in your first-semester courses. SOAR is just one component of your transition to UW–Madison. The Center for the First-Year Experience offers many opportunities throughout your first year.
The SOAR Program offers the opportunity to:
- Gain exposure to the array of academic and social opportunities at UW–Madison.
- Begin to integrate into university life and UW–Madison culture.
- Think about what you would like your Wisconsin Experience to be.
- Gain an understanding of university policies, procedures, and processes.
Your SOAR experience will center around two important themes: Academic Advising and Student Life. The content of each theme will be designed to help you have a successful transition as a new Badger. The SOAR program is supported by Canvas, the University’s learning management system. UW-Madison faculty use Canvas for your courses, so SOAR will also an opportunity for you to get comfortable using the system before classes begin. We can’t wait to meet you this summer!

Have you already signed up for SOAR? Please check out our Understanding SOAR & Getting Started page to receive a full outline of your SOAR experience and learn your next steps.
Placement test scores help academic advisors learn about your skills as a student. These scores are also important when helping you choose courses at the correct level. You must complete all your required testing before your SOAR Advising Week. Visit our Placement Testing page for more information and updates.
SOAR Advising Content
You will have a SOAR advising Canvas course specific to your advising group. This self-paced course will provide a comprehensive overview of: UW-Madison academic requirements, the advising process, and specific information about your academic school/college. You must complete your assigned course before your Advising Week.
Your Advising Week
During your advising week, you will meet one-on-one with a professional academic advisor in your advising group. At UW-Madison, advising is a partnership between you and the network of advisors you build during your time here. You will work together to complete your advising requirements and plan your first semester courses.
SOAR Student Life Content
In June, you will receive a SOAR Student Life Canvas course. This self-paced course will feature a variety of themed content to set the foundation for your Wisconsin Experience. You will learn all about what our campus has to offer to help you succeed as a Badger and beyond.
Live Web Events
We will be hosting a full calendar of live web-based events led by campus partners and our SOAR New Student Leaders (NSLs). These virtual events will give you the opportunity to learn more about various campus resources and navigating your first year as a Badger.
Building Your Badger Community
We are excited for SOAR to be a summer-long experience for you! We will be providing many opportunities for you to build your Badger community virtually. These include: one-on-one and small group conversations with current Badgers, virtual hangouts, affinity spaces, a summer newsletter, and more!
